To continue enhancing motorcycle riding safety, Highway Bureau expands the subsidy plans for general and heavy motorcycle riding training again this year to 40,000 people all over the country with a subsidized training fee for each person in NT$1,300. Up to December 15, 2023, anyone who is over 18 years old, registers motorcycle riding training courses (for 16 hours), completes the training, and passes the driving test is entitled to apply. Furthermore, to promote correct concepts of road riding and defensive riding among those who have driving license, Highway Bureau launched a pilot plan of subsidy, “Road Safe Riding Training” from April this year. After receiving the driving license, riders who participate in the road safety riding training in the training school will be subsidized additional training fee of NT$1,200.

According to the Director of Tainan Motor Vehicles Office, Huang Song-Ling, the subsidy to the road safety riding training is not limited to those who pass the driving test in the driving school, it also opens to those who have driving license and complete the training. The training hours of the course is three hours, including pre-briefing of the road training, actual road training, and after-class supervision. During the training, supervisors will find out the learning progress of trainees timely and monitor their riding safety. Through the actual road training, it deepens drivers’ correct riding concepts and is helpful to enhance road safety.

Tainan Motor Vehicles Office highlights motorcycles are the most common vehicle used by students for transportation. To establish the concept of motorcycle safe riding among students, our Office works with Tainan Automobile Driving Training, National Cheng Kung University, and Chung-Hwa Medical University to jointly promote road safety riding training. Currently, the quota of subsidy for 210 people in Tainan has been fully applied. Shared by the students who completed training, they said that they have gained a deeper understanding in the concept of defensive riding through the complete training system in motorcycle riding training school. Supervisors in the training school monitor and teach them road safety riding during the whole training period, which really helps the road riding in the future. Additionally, the government offers subsidy for the training fee; they only spent little to have protection in safety.

Director, Huang Song-Ling, further supplemented the research data suggested the risk of regulations violation reduced 56% and the risk of causing accidents reduced 33% on those who participated in riding training compared to those who did not receive training. For student group (18-24 years old), other than the subsidy of NT$1,300 for each trainee in motorcycle training schools from the Central Government, Tainan City Government implements “additional subsidy” of NT$1,300 this year. Each trainee will be awarded a subsidy of NT$2,600 in total. Through encouraging students to participate in the training, it aims to reduce traffic accidents. People who would like to register for the training can find out relevant information from the website of Chiayi Motor Vehicles Office – Motorcycle Riding Training Subsidy Zone (https://cyi2.thb.gov.tw/cp.aspx?n=9688).
