With the new provisions under the amendment to the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act effective on June 30 this year, a driver will be subject to license suspension for 2 months and be required to take road traffic safety lessons if he/she is charged with 12 traffic violation points within 1 year. Drivers shall drive with caution to prevent license suspension.

Major violations such as failure to yield for pedestrians, running red lights, and operating a vehicle in a dangerous manner will result in charging of 3 traffic violation points. Furthermore, speeding on a freeway or highway, failure to maintain a safe distance, changing lanes without following the related regulations, overtaking or driving in lines without following the regulations or using road shoulders in violation of regulations will result in charging of 2 traffic violation points. Other common violations, such as using a mobile phone while driving, driving without following traffic directions, making a right turn at a red light, temporary parking or stopping on sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, intersections, or bus stops, speeding on regular roads, and failure to use turn signals will result in charging of 1 traffic violation point.

In receipt of a citation for violations, a vehicle owner are advised to remember to claim the liability to the driver before the final reporting date. Failure to do so will result in punishments for the vehicle owner. Vehicle owners with a driver's license will be subject to charging of traffic violation point (s), license suspension, or the required attendance at road traffic safety lessons; vehicle owners without a driver's license will be subject to charging of traffic violation(s) to the vehicle or license plate suspension (revocation); where the vehicle owner is a rental company, the fines will be doubled. Vehicle owners! To protect your rights, claim the liability of the responsible driver in case of citation for violations.
